GLAD-06 – Thracian Gladiator
The Thracian, or Thraex, was one of the most recognisable specialist gladiators of the Roman arena. His fighting style and equipment were deliberately different from those of heavier opponents, giving Roman spectators a contest built around contrasting strengths and weaknesses.
A Thracian typically carried a relatively small rectangular or square shield and fought with the distinctive sica, a short curved sword designed to strike around an opponent's shield. Because his own shield provided less protection, substantial greaves protected the legs, while an elaborate helmet covered the head.
GLAD-06 – Thracian brings this famous gladiatorial class into the John Jenkins Designs arena. His combination of compact shield, curved weapon and protective armour makes him immediately identifiable alongside other types such as the Murmillo, Secutor and Retiarius.
The figure can stand alone as a study of Roman gladiatorial equipment or be paired with a suitably equipped adversary to recreate one of the carefully matched contests staged for the crowds.
Rather than simply assembling generic fighters, adding distinct classes such as the Thracian allows a collection to reflect the specialised nature of Roman gladiatorial combat.
Available from The Military Workshop – a finely realised John Jenkins Designs Thracian representing one of the most distinctive and formidable fighting styles of the Roman arena.
