GLT-18 – Ottoman Heavy Machine Gun

Few weapons shaped the battlefield of the First World War more dramatically than the machine gun.

At Gallipoli, machine guns could cover exposed approaches and make attacks across open or rising ground extraordinarily dangerous. Carefully positioned automatic weapons multiplied the defensive power of troops already protected by trenches and difficult terrain.

GLT-18 – Ottoman Heavy Machine Gun brings this crucial element of the Turkish defence into the John Jenkins Designs Gallipoli series.

Rather than placing it directly at the front of a display, the gun can be positioned in a prepared emplacement with a commanding field of fire. Ottoman riflemen and grenade troops can then be arranged around it to create a layered defensive position.

Placed opposite charging ANZACs, the set also helps explain visually why assaults against prepared positions could prove so costly.
