GMP-15M – Mounted Samurai Archer – Minamoto Clan

Mounted archery stood at the heart of the classical image of the early samurai.

During the Genpei War of 1180–1185, warriors of the rival Minamoto and Taira clans fought for political dominance in a conflict that ultimately transformed the government of Japan.

GMP-15M portrays a mounted samurai archer of the Minamoto Clan, combining two of the defining elements of early samurai warfare – horsemanship and the bow.

Before the sword became overwhelmingly dominant in the popular image of the samurai, the bow was a prestigious battlefield weapon. Elite mounted warriors could use their mobility to manoeuvre, engage opponents and demonstrate the martial skills expected of their class.

The horse gives this figure tremendous presence in a display and provides an excellent contrast with foot samurai and retainers.

Available through The Military Workshop – a magnificent John Jenkins Designs mounted Minamoto archer representing the warrior traditions of 12th-century Japan.
