GMPM-02 – Benkei – Minamoto Clan
Few warrior figures from medieval Japan have achieved the legendary status of Musashibō Benkei.
Tradition remembers Benkei as an immensely strong warrior monk who became the devoted follower of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, one of the great commanders of the Genpei War.
Stories surrounding Benkei blend history and legend. Among the most famous is his supposed encounter with Yoshitsune on a bridge, after which he became his loyal companion. His final stand is equally celebrated: according to later tradition, Benkei defended Yoshitsune so fiercely that he died standing upright, an episode remembered as the “standing death of Benkei.”
GMPM-02 brings this extraordinary character into the John Jenkins Designs Minamoto range.
Displayed alongside Yoshitsune and other Minamoto personalities, Benkei adds not simply another warrior but one of the great legendary characters of Japanese martial history.
Available through The Military Workshop – a superb John Jenkins Designs representation of Benkei, the legendary warrior monk whose loyalty to Minamoto no Yoshitsune became part of Japanese folklore.
