GMPM-05 – Tomoe Gozen – Minamoto Clan
Among all the personalities associated with the Genpei War, Tomoe Gozen has become one of the most celebrated.
She appears most famously in The Tale of the Heike, the great medieval Japanese war chronicle recounting the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto. Tomoe is described as a formidable warrior associated with Minamoto no Yoshinaka, skilled in both horsemanship and combat.
How much of her story can be treated as firm biography remains debated, but her place in Japanese martial tradition is undeniable. She has endured as one of the best-known examples of the onna-musha – women of the warrior class associated with martial action.
