GMPM-07 – Minamoto Standard Bearer | John Jenkins Designs
GMPM-07 represents a standard bearer of the Minamoto Clan during the Gempei War of 1180–1185, the great civil conflict fought between the rival Minamoto and Taira families during the closing years of Japan’s Heian period.
The Minamoto, also known as the Genji, were traditionally associated with white banners, which helped distinguish their warriors from the red-bannered Taira on the battlefield. In an age when opposing armies could be similarly equipped and dressed, standards played an important role in identifying formations, maintaining cohesion and displaying clan allegiance.
The Gempei War ultimately ended with the defeat of the Taira and the rise of the Minamoto, helping establish the Kamakura Shogunate and a new era in which military government would dominate Japanese political life.
With its prominent white standard, GMPM-07 makes an excellent focal point for a Minamoto formation and is particularly effective surrounded by samurai, archers and other warriors of the clan.
Will be available from The Military Workshop.
