GMPT-01 – Taira no Tomomori – Taira Clan
The Taira Clan rose to extraordinary political power during the 12th century before its rivalry with the Minamoto erupted into the Genpei War.
Taira no Tomomori was one of the important military figures of the clan and a son of the powerful Taira no Kiyomori.
Tomomori fought during the desperate final stages of the conflict as the Taira were gradually driven from their former position of dominance. His name is particularly associated with the climactic Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185, a naval engagement that ended in catastrophic defeat for the Taira.
According to the traditional account, Tomomori chose death after the battle was lost, becoming one of the tragic figures immortalised in later Japanese literature and theatre.
GMPT-01 gives the Taira army an important named commander and a natural centrepiece around which its retainers and warriors can be assembled.
Available from The Military Workshop – a commanding John Jenkins Designs Taira no Tomomori representing one of the central military personalities in the dramatic final chapter of the Genpei War.
