GMPT-07 – Taira Standard Bearer | John Jenkins Designs
GMPT-07 depicts a standard bearer of the Taira Clan, one of the two great rival families whose struggle for power culminated in the Gempei War of 1180–1185.
The Taira, or Heike, were closely connected with the Imperial Court and were renowned not only as warriors but also for their accomplishments in courtly culture and the arts. During the Gempei War their forces were traditionally identified by red banners, contrasting sharply with the white standards carried by their Minamoto opponents.
Battlefield standards were essential for identification and command, particularly where warriors on opposing sides could otherwise appear very similar. The sight of red and white banners came to symbolise the two rival factions of the conflict.
The war eventually ended in disaster for the Taira at the naval Battle of Dan-no-Ura, after which the victorious Minamoto established a new military government.
GMPT-07 is a striking addition to a Taira formation and pairs especially well with its Minamoto counterpart, GMPM-07.
Will be available from The Military Workshop.
