GWA-02(31) – Infantry Officer – 31st Battalion
The Australian Imperial Force that fought on the Western Front during the First World War developed into an experienced and highly effective fighting force, but its junior officers faced an extraordinarily demanding role. They were expected to lead from the front, maintain direction during attacks and keep their men moving even when communications and carefully prepared plans began to break down.
GWA-02(31) represents an Infantry Officer of the 31st Battalion, AIF, a battalion raised in Australia in 1915 and allocated to the 8th Brigade of the 5th Australian Division.
The 31st Battalion's first major action on the Western Front came at Fromelles in July 1916, one of the most costly episodes in Australian military history. The battalion subsequently served through the difficult campaigns of 1917 and 1918 as the Australian divisions became increasingly central to operations on the Western Front.
This officer makes a natural command figure for a formation of 31st Battalion infantry. Position him among advancing troops, directing men across shell-torn ground or preparing them for movement from a trench.
Available from The Military Workshop – a commanding John Jenkins Designs Australian officer representing the leadership of the 31st Battalion AIF on the Western Front.
