GWA-02(53) – Infantry Officer – 53rd Battalion, 14th Brigade, 5th Division
The 53rd Battalion AIF was formed in Egypt in early 1916 as part of the expansion of the Australian Imperial Force following the Gallipoli Campaign. It became part of the 14th Brigade of the 5th Australian Division before being sent to France.

For the 53rd Battalion, the Western Front began with a particularly severe introduction. At Fromelles on 19–20 July 1916, the 5th Australian Division suffered devastating losses during an attack against strongly defended German positions.
