GWA-11(31) – Stokes Mortar Crew – 31st Battalion – 10 Pieces

One of the most important infantry support weapons to emerge during the First World War was the Stokes mortar.

Developed during the war, the weapon was comparatively simple, portable and capable of delivering explosive bombs at a steep trajectory. This made it extremely useful against enemy positions hidden behind trenches or other cover that could not easily be engaged by direct rifle and machine-gun fire.

GWA-11(31) is an impressive ten-piece Stokes Mortar Crew representing the 31st Battalion AIF. Rather than a single weapons figure, the set allows collectors to create a complete working mortar position with the crew and associated activity surrounding the weapon.

A mortar team would normally operate behind the foremost infantry, supporting attacks or engaging identified enemy positions. This makes the set ideal for the middle or rear of a diorama, with advancing 31st Battalion troops positioned farther forward.

With ten pieces, it also becomes a substantial vignette in its own right – one capable of showing the teamwork required to keep an infantry support weapon operating.

Available through The Military Workshop – an outstanding John Jenkins Designs 31st Battalion Stokes Mortar Crew and a major centrepiece for an Australian Western Front collection.
