Long before modern digital communications, armies found ingenious ways of carrying information across a battlefield. During the First World War, one of the oldest methods remained remarkably useful – the carrier pigeon.

GWB-15A – Ress with Bird represents a soldier associated with this important communication system.

Pigeons could carry written messages when telephone lines were cut, wireless communication was unavailable or runners faced exceptionally dangerous conditions. Their ability to return to their loft made them a valuable backup in an environment where reliable communication was notoriously difficult.
