GWB-15B – Two Pigeon Handlers
The First World War combined some of the newest military technologies with methods that had existed for centuries.
GWB-15B – Two Pigeon Handlers captures this perfectly. Even as tanks, aircraft and motor vehicles appeared on the battlefield, carrier pigeons continued to carry urgent messages when other communications failed.
Telephone cables were vulnerable to shellfire, radio technology remained comparatively limited and human runners could face extreme danger. A trained pigeon offered another way of getting information from an isolated unit back to headquarters.
The two handlers can be positioned near a loft, command post or transport area, perhaps preparing birds for distribution or receiving returned messengers.
Combined with GWB-15A and the motorcycle despatch figures, the set can form part of an unusually detailed First World War communications display.
