GWB-15C – Despatch Rider on Motorbike with Pigeon

Few figures illustrate the mixture of old and new technology during the Great War as clearly as GWB-15C.

Here, a motorcycle despatch rider – representing the rapidly growing importance of mechanised transport – is combined with a carrier pigeon, a communication method with a history stretching back centuries.

Despatch riders carried orders and reports between headquarters and units when telephone connections were unavailable or unreliable. Motorcycles allowed them to cover distances far more rapidly than a runner on foot, although damaged roads, mud and shellfire made their work hazardous.

The inclusion of the pigeon adds another layer to the communications story and makes this an especially interesting standalone vignette.

Place the rider on a rear-area road, beside a command post or among other signals personnel as part of a larger battlefield network.
