Before secure modern communications, a written message sometimes had to be physically carried from one headquarters to another.

GWB-19C – Despatch Rider on Motorbike portrays one of the men entrusted with that task during the First World War.

Motorcycles gave military messengers valuable speed and mobility, particularly on roads behind the front. Their riders carried orders, reports and other information between units, often travelling alone and in difficult conditions.

For collectors, the motorcycle also adds welcome visual variety among marching infantry, wagons and static trench positions. Place it on a road beside the Type J truck, approaching a headquarters or passing a supply column.
