GWB-54 – Artillery Crew NCO
A gun detachment required discipline and coordination if it was to maintain an effective rate of fire, particularly during the immense bombardments that characterised the Western Front.
GWB-54 portrays an Artillery Crew Non-Commissioned Officer, giving collectors an important supervisory figure for their gun crew.
The NCO was an experienced soldier within the detachment and formed a vital link between officers and the men physically operating the weapon. Around a heavy artillery position, where shells, fuzes and complex procedures all had to be handled correctly, experience mattered enormously.
Rather than positioning him as another labouring crewman, GWB-54 can be placed slightly apart from the gun team, overseeing the activity as shells are prepared and the weapon is serviced.
Combined with GWB-53, GWB-55, GWB-57 and the other artillery releases, the figure helps give the battery a convincing command structure.
Available through The Military Workshop – a commanding John Jenkins Designs Artillery NCO bringing authority and organisation to a Great War gun crew.
