GWF-02 – Saint-Chamond Tank
The First World War produced some extraordinary armoured vehicles as engineers attempted to solve the unprecedented problem of crossing trenches, shell craters and barbed wire under enemy fire.
France's Saint-Chamond was among the most distinctive.
Entering service in 1917, the Saint-Chamond was a large and heavily armed vehicle with a long hull extending well beyond its relatively short track system. This gave it considerable firepower but could make crossing wide trenches and badly broken ground particularly difficult.
Its principal armament gave the vehicle substantial direct-fire capability, supported by machine guns for defence against infantry.
GWF-02 – Saint-Chamond Tank recreates this remarkable French machine and provides an impressive centrepiece for a Great War battlefield. Its unusual proportions immediately distinguish it from British rhomboid tanks and the smaller Renault FT.
Position it advancing with French infantry, halted for maintenance or negotiating shell-damaged terrain to emphasise both the ambition and limitations of early tank design.
