GWF-05 – “Petit Jean” – Little John
The French soldier of the First World War – the poilu – became one of the enduring symbols of France's wartime experience.
GWF-05 – “Petit Jean” or “Little John” gives that enormous national story a much more personal face.
France mobilised millions of men during the conflict, and its soldiers endured some of the war's longest and most destructive battles, including Verdun, the Somme and the campaigns of 1918. Behind those enormous statistics were individual soldiers living, fighting and surviving from one day to the next.
A named character such as Petit Jean works particularly well in a quieter part of a diorama, where the viewer can appreciate the figure individually rather than losing him among a mass of troops.
He can be displayed with other French soldiers, transport and tank crews to build a collection that shows both the machinery of war and the ordinary men caught within it.
