The appearance of tanks on the battlefield created an entirely new category of soldier – the tank crewman.
GWF-07A – Tank Crew #1 represents French armoured personnel during the pioneering years when virtually every aspect of tank warfare was still being learned through experience.
Early crews endured cramped interiors, mechanical failures, extreme heat, fumes and limited visibility. Simply communicating within the vehicle could be difficult, while crossing the shattered ground of the Western Front placed enormous strain on both crew and machinery.
These figures allow the collector to show the men outside their tank, perhaps during maintenance, receiving instructions or taking a brief pause between operations.
Combined with GWF-06A stowage and the larger French armoured vehicles, the crew helps turn a technical model into a scene centred upon the soldiers who actually operated it.
