GWF-11 – Two French Tank Crew
The introduction of tanks during the First World War created an entirely new kind of battlefield experience. The men who crewed these pioneering machines had to master unfamiliar technology while enduring conditions inside early tanks that were hot, noisy, cramped and physically exhausting.
GWF-11 – Two Tank Crew represents two members of France's developing armoured forces. French tank crews served in a variety of machines as France experimented with different approaches to armoured warfare, from the large Schneider CA1 and Saint-Chamond to the revolutionary smaller Renault FT.
Mechanical breakdowns were common, and crews frequently had to carry out maintenance and repairs themselves. Once outside the protection of their vehicle they were as vulnerable as any other soldier on the battlefield.
These two figures are therefore ideal for a halted tank scene. Position them beside a vehicle discussing the route ahead, carrying out an inspection or simply taking a brief rest away from the confined interior.
Combined with tank stowage and other French crew figures, GWF-11 helps turn a standalone armoured vehicle into a much more convincing operational scene.
Available from The Military Workshop – two characterful John Jenkins Designs French tank crewmen representing the men who pioneered armoured warfare on the Western Front.
