GWF-24 – Grenadiers Walking
Grenades became indispensable infantry weapons once the Western Front settled into the close confines of trench warfare.
Specialist grenadiers were employed to carry and use these weapons during attacks on enemy trenches, strongpoints and dugouts. A grenade could reach around traverses and into positions that could not easily be engaged with direct rifle fire.
GWF-24 – Grenadiers Walking portrays French grenade troops moving forward rather than already engaged in combat.
This gives the figures a strong sense of anticipation. They might be approaching the front line before an attack, moving through a communication trench or following behind the leading infantry with their specialist weapons ready.
Place them behind advancing riflemen and machine-gun teams, allowing the different figures to show how a French infantry formation contained soldiers with a variety of battlefield roles.
Available through The Military Workshop – a distinctive John Jenkins Designs French grenadier set representing the specialist troops who became increasingly important during the trench fighting of the Great War.
