GWF-27 – Two LMG Crew
As the First World War progressed, armies increasingly sought lighter automatic weapons that could move forward with attacking infantry.
GWF-27 – Two LMG Crew represents a French light machine-gun team, giving collectors an important supporting weapon for their advancing poilus.
Unlike the heavier machine guns that were normally operated from established positions, lighter automatic weapons offered infantry greater mobility. They could accompany troops during an advance and provide concentrated fire against enemy positions.
A two-man team also demonstrates that an automatic weapon was rarely the responsibility of the gunner alone. Ammunition had to be carried and supplied, and the weapon had to remain operational while the unit moved across the battlefield.
Place GWF-27 slightly behind the leading riflemen or in a shell crater providing covering fire. Together with grenadiers, officers and ordinary infantry, the set helps create a much more complete French fighting formation.
