GWUS-07A – Tank Commander
When American forces entered combat on the Western Front, tank warfare was still a remarkably young military concept.
GWUS-07A – Tank Commander represents an American officer serving with this new arm of warfare.
American tank units drew heavily upon Allied experience and equipment. The Renault FT, in particular, became important to American light tank operations and influenced later tank development with its compact layout and fully rotating turret.
Tank commanders had to coordinate their vehicles across terrain devastated by years of shelling while maintaining contact with supporting infantry. Visibility was limited, mechanical reliability could never be taken for granted and battlefield communications remained primitive by later standards.
Placed with an appropriate American tank, GWUS-07A gives the vehicle an identifiable commander and provides a human connection to the rapidly developing story of U.S. armoured warfare.
