HELEN – Helen of Troy
Few women from the ancient world occupy a place in legend quite like Helen of Troy. Celebrated in Greek mythology for her extraordinary beauty, Helen stands at the centre of the story of the Trojan War, the great conflict immortalised in Homer's Iliad and in centuries of later art, literature and storytelling.
Helen was traditionally the daughter of Zeus and Leda and became the wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta. Her departure for Troy with the Trojan prince Paris – whether portrayed as an abduction or an elopement varies between ancient traditions – became the catalyst for the Greek expedition against Troy. Menelaus and his brother Agamemnon gathered a coalition of Greek rulers and warriors, beginning the legendary ten-year siege.
HELEN – Helen of Troy gives the John Jenkins Designs Trojan War collection one of its most important non-combatant personalities. While warriors such as Achilles, Hector, Ajax and Paris dominate the battlefield, Helen provides the human connection to the story around which the entire legendary conflict developed.
She is ideally displayed within a Trojan palace or city setting, perhaps alongside Paris, Priam and other Trojan personalities. Used this way, Helen provides an excellent contrast to the massed warriors outside the walls and allows a collection to explore the story behind the fighting rather than the battle alone.
Available from The Military Workshop – an elegant John Jenkins Designs portrayal of Helen of Troy, the legendary woman whose story became forever intertwined with the fall of one of antiquity's most famous cities.
