HITT-01 – King Muwatalli II with Hittite Sun Disk Standard – Hittite War Chariot
In the 13th century BC, two of the ancient world's great powers confronted one another for control of territory in the eastern Mediterranean and Syria: New Kingdom Egypt under Pharaoh Ramesses II and the Hittite Empire under King Muwatalli II.
Their rivalry culminated in the famous Battle of Kadesh, generally dated to 1274 BC, fought near the city of Kadesh on the Orontes River in what is now Syria.
HITT-01 places King Muwatalli II aboard a Hittite war chariot accompanied by the striking Sun Disk Standard, creating a commanding centrepiece for the Hittite army. Muwatalli had gathered a substantial coalition of forces and used intelligence and deception effectively before the battle, helping conceal the position of the main Hittite army from Ramesses.
The chariot was one of the defining weapons of Late Bronze Age warfare. Hittite chariot forces played a central role at Kadesh, launching a major attack against the Egyptian army while parts of Ramesses' force were still separated.
As a royal command piece, HITT-01 is ideally placed behind the main chariot force or surrounded by spearmen and other Hittite troops. The standard further distinguishes the king from the mass of warriors around him.
