HITT-03 – Hittite War Chariot | John Jenkins Designs
During the Late Bronze Age, the Hittite Empire developed a formidable military force in which the war chariot played a central role.
The strength of the Hittite army was demonstrated during the Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC, when King Muwatalli II confronted the Egyptian army commanded by Pharaoh Ramesses II.
According to the historical background provided by John Jenkins Designs, the Hittite king launched an attack involving approximately 2,500 chariots, which crossed the Orontes River and struck the advancing Egyptian formations before they had fully prepared for battle.
The Hittite chariots were generally heavier than their Egyptian counterparts and were specifically designed to carry three crewmen.
These vehicles featured a centrally positioned axle, six-spoked wheels and a substantial box-shaped body, allowing them to accommodate additional fighting personnel.
The three-man crew typically consisted of a charioteer, a shield-bearing spearman and a second warrior armed with a spear.
Unlike the lighter Egyptian chariots, which were primarily used as mobile archery platforms, the heavier Hittite vehicles were particularly suited to close-quarter combat.
HITT-03 – Hittite War Chariot by John Jenkins Designs recreates the distinctive Hittite war chariot associated with the famous Battle of Kadesh.
The model represents an important element of the Hittite military and is designed to complement the manufacturer's Hittite infantry, Syrian archers and other war chariots.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs The Ancients – New Kingdom Egyptians and the Battle of Kadesh collection, this impressive model provides a centrepiece for a Bronze Age battlefield display.
