HITT-20C – Syrian Archer | John Jenkins Designs

During the 15th to 13th centuries BC, the Hittite Empire was one of the dominant powers of the ancient Near East, competing with Egypt, Assyria and Mitanni for control of important territories and trade routes.

Northern Syria was particularly valuable to the Hittites because of its strategic position along the routes connecting the Cilician Gates with Mesopotamia. Protecting this region became increasingly important as the Egyptian Empire expanded northwards under Pharaoh Ramesses II.

These competing ambitions eventually led to the famous Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC, fought between the Egyptian army of Ramesses II and the Hittite forces commanded by King Muwatalli II.

The Hittite army included soldiers drawn from its territories, allied states and mercenary contingents.

HITT-20C – Syrian Archer by John Jenkins Designs represents a Syrian mercenary archer serving within the Hittite forces.

The figure is depicted having just released an arrow from his bow, capturing the final moment of an archery sequence.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs The Ancients – Battle of Kadesh collection, this figure complements the other Syrian archers and Hittite infantry, allowing collectors to build a larger force representing the Hittite army.
