The Roman legion of the Mid Republic was a highly organised fighting force in which discipline, leadership and military standards played a central role.

At the heart of its command structure stood the centurion, an experienced officer responsible for the training, discipline and battlefield leadership of his soldiers.

Centurions were expected to lead from the front, setting an example of courage and determination during engagements. Their ability to control the movements of their men was particularly important in the manipular system employed during the Punic Wars.

The signifer served alongside the officers as the unit's standard bearer. His standard provided a visible rallying point, allowing soldiers to identify their formation and maintain cohesion during the confusion of battle.

Roman military standards were also powerful symbols of honour, and their capture by an enemy was considered deeply shameful.
