HMRR-02Y – Centurion and Signifer with Yellow Shields | John Jenkins Designs
The success of the Roman army depended upon its carefully structured system of command and the discipline maintained by its experienced officers.
During the Mid Republican period, the legion was organised into maniples of hastati, principes and triarii. These formations were commanded by centurions, officers responsible for training their soldiers, maintaining discipline and leading them into battle.
A centurion's experience and leadership were particularly important during the confusion of close-quarter combat, when soldiers needed clear orders and an officer capable of holding the formation together.
Accompanying the centurion was the signifer, a standard bearer who carried an important military emblem identifying the unit. The standard served as a rallying point and helped soldiers maintain their position during battle.
The loss of a standard was considered a serious disgrace, demonstrating its importance to Roman military identity and morale.
HMRR-02Y – Centurion and Signifer by John Jenkins Designs is a two-figure command set with yellow shields, representing these important members of a Republican Roman infantry formation.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this set is ideal for accompanying a formation of hastati.
