HMRR-03Y – Cornicen – Roman Army of the Mid-Republic
HMRR-03Y provides another version of the Roman Cornicen, allowing collectors to coordinate the figure with the corresponding shield and colour variations elsewhere in the Mid-Republic range.
Roman armies needed methods of communicating that could function amid marching troops, shouting men and the tremendous noise of battle. Horn signals offered one solution.
The Cornicen's large curved cornu made him visually distinctive, but his purpose was practical. Signals could communicate orders and help coordinate the movements and routines of soldiers who could not simply hear a commander's voice.
This figure works especially well beside standards and officers, creating a clearly identifiable command section behind or among the fighting infantry.
For collectors building multiple Roman units, the different Cornicen versions also make it possible to give separate formations their own signalling personnel.
Available from The Military Workshop – a finely detailed John Jenkins Designs Cornicen representing the communication and organisation behind Rome's formidable Mid-Republican armies.
