As the youngest heavy infantry in the legion, the Hastati carried the responsibility of launching the first assault. Their role demanded courage, endurance, and discipline, as success often depended upon their ability to weaken or disrupt the enemy before the more experienced Principes entered the battle.

Equipped with large scutum shields, pila, and gladii, these soldiers represented the future strength of the Roman Republic, gaining invaluable experience that would eventually see many promoted into the ranks of the Principes.
