HMRR-11Y – Hastatus with Yellow Shield | John Jenkins Designs

The hastati were among the most important soldiers of the Roman army during the middle centuries of the Republic.

These young heavy infantrymen occupied the first line of the Roman legion, taking responsibility for the initial assault against enemy formations.

The Roman manipular system divided the army into smaller tactical units that could move and fight with greater flexibility than a single continuous infantry formation.

Hastati carried heavy throwing javelins, large shields and short swords. They typically began an engagement by throwing their pila before drawing their swords and advancing into close combat.

The Punic Wars provided some of the greatest tests of this system, as Roman soldiers fought against Carthaginian armies employing a wide range of infantry and cavalry forces.

HMRR-11Y – Hastatus by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Republican Roman infantryman carrying a yellow shield, holding his sword at chest height with the blade angled upwards.

Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this figure complements other hastati and enables collectors to recreate the front ranks of the Republican Roman legion.
