HMRR-12RN – Three Hastati with Red Shields | John Jenkins Designs
The Roman legion of the Mid Republic was organised to combine flexibility, discipline and the fighting experience of soldiers of different ages.
The hastati, generally younger and less experienced than the principes and triarii, formed the first line of heavy infantry and were responsible for making the initial attack.
Their equipment included large shields, throwing javelins and the gladius, a short sword particularly effective in close combat.
Roman infantry tactics often began with the hastati advancing towards the enemy and throwing their pila before closing with swords. Their shields provided essential protection while fighting against opposing infantry.
If the first line could not overcome the enemy, it could withdraw through the gaps between maniples, allowing the second line of principes to advance.
HMRR-12RN – Three Hastati by John Jenkins Designs depicts three Republican Roman soldiers carrying red shields, leaning backwards with their swords extended forward at mid-torso height.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this set provides an excellent representation of the close-quarter fighting that characterised Roman infantry warfare.
