HMRR-12Y – Hastatus with Yellow Shield | John Jenkins Designs
The hastati were the front-line heavy infantry of the Roman Republican legion, serving during a period when Rome was rapidly expanding its military influence throughout the Mediterranean.
The Roman army of the Mid Republic employed a system of three principal infantry lines. The hastati occupied the first line, followed by the principes and finally the experienced triarii.
Armed with heavy throwing javelins and short swords, the hastati were expected to disrupt opposing formations before engaging the enemy at close quarters.
Their large shields provided protection during these encounters, allowing soldiers to advance and fight in tightly organised formations.
During the Second Punic War, these tactics were tested against the formidable armies commanded by Hannibal, whose victories demonstrated both the strengths and weaknesses of Roman battlefield methods.
HMRR-12Y – Hastatus by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Republican Roman infantryman carrying a yellow shield, leaning backwards with his sword extended forward at mid-torso height.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this figure is an excellent addition to displays of Roman infantry engaged in close combat.
