HMRR-12YN – Three Hastati with Yellow Shields | John Jenkins Designs
During the middle centuries of the Roman Republic, the army employed a system of infantry organisation known as the manipular legion.
The hastati formed the first line of heavy infantry, supported by the more experienced principes in the second line and the veteran triarii in reserve.
These soldiers were equipped with large shields, short swords and throwing javelins. Their battlefield tactics combined missile attacks with aggressive close-quarter fighting.
After throwing their pila, the hastati advanced with their gladii, using their shields for protection while attempting to break the enemy's formation.
If their attack failed, they could withdraw and allow the principes to advance, giving the Roman army a valuable degree of tactical flexibility.
This system was employed throughout the Punic Wars, when Roman forces confronted the armies of Carthage and its allies.
HMRR-12YN – Three Hastati by John Jenkins Designs depicts three Republican Roman infantrymen carrying yellow shields, leaning backwards with their swords extended forward at mid-torso height.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this set is ideal for recreating close combat between Roman legionaries and their opponents.
