HMRR-14RN – Three Hastati with Red Shields | John Jenkins Designs
The hastati were the first line of heavy infantry in the Roman manipular legion, a formation that played a central role in the Republic's military campaigns.
Generally composed of younger Roman citizens, the hastati were expected to make the initial assault against enemy infantry. Their equipment included a large shield, protective armour, a gladius and heavy throwing javelins known as pila.
The pilum was an important weapon in Roman warfare. Thrown shortly before contact, it could penetrate enemy shields or cause confusion within opposing formations, giving the advancing legionaries an advantage in close combat.
During the Punic Wars, Roman hastati fought against the diverse armies of Carthage, including Libyan infantry, Iberian warriors and Gallic troops.
Their role demanded courage and discipline, as they were often the first heavily armed Roman soldiers to meet the enemy.
HMRR-14RN – Three Hastati by John Jenkins Designs depicts three Republican Roman infantrymen with red shields, armed with pila.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this set is designed to complement larger formations of Roman legionaries.
