HMRR-15YN – Three Hastati with Yellow Shields | John Jenkins Designs
During the Mid Republican period, the Roman legion was organised into three principal lines of heavy infantry: the hastati, principes and triarii.
The hastati formed the first line and generally consisted of younger soldiers who were expected to engage the enemy before the more experienced troops advanced.
Their principal weapons included the pilum, a heavy throwing javelin designed to penetrate shields and disrupt enemy formations, and the gladius, a short sword used in close combat.
Roman tactics relied upon the hastati advancing in organised maniples, throwing their pila before closing with the enemy. If the first line was unable to overcome its opponents, it could withdraw through the gaps in the formation, allowing the principes to continue the battle.
This system of successive fighting lines was a defining feature of Roman warfare during the Punic Wars.
HMRR-15YN – Three Hastati by John Jenkins Designs is a three-figure set depicting Republican Roman infantrymen with yellow shields, throwing their pila.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this set is ideal for recreating the opening stages of a Roman infantry attack.
