Long before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, the Inca Empire ruled one of the largest and most sophisticated civilisations ever established in the Americas. Stretching for more than 4,000 kilometres along the Andes Mountains, the empire was supported by an extensive road network, remarkable engineering achievements and a highly organised military capable of rapidly deploying thousands of warriors across difficult mountain terrain. Every able-bodied man was expected to serve, creating an army that relied upon discipline, organisation and an intimate knowledge of the rugged landscape.

Among the most effective warriors within the Inca ranks were the slingers. Although often underestimated today, the sling was a devastating battlefield weapon in skilled hands. Using carefully selected stones or specially shaped projectiles, experienced slingers could strike targets with astonishing speed and accuracy over considerable distances. Historical accounts describe sling stones being powerful enough to shatter helmets, break bones and even unhorse mounted opponents. Positioned ahead of the main army, Inca slingers harassed advancing enemies, disrupted formations and weakened opposing forces before close combat began.
