IWA-50 – USS Wasp (CV-7), January 1941
In January 1941, the United States was not yet formally at war, but its armed forces were preparing for the possibility that the expanding global conflict might eventually draw America in.
The aircraft carrier USS Wasp (CV-7) represented an important part of that naval preparation.
Commissioned in 1940, Wasp was a unique carrier design shaped in part by the limitations imposed upon naval construction during the inter-war treaty era. She joined the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and operated during a period of rapidly increasing tension before America's entry into the Second World War.
IWA-50 – USS Wasp (CV-7), January 1941 captures the carrier during this fascinating pre-war period. For an aviation collection, the setting offers the opportunity to display colourful U.S. Navy aircraft before wartime experience brought major changes in markings, equipment and operational practice.
Wasp would later undertake important wartime service, including the famous missions that helped deliver British Spitfires to Malta in 1942. She was subsequently transferred to the Pacific and was lost after being torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-19 on 15 September 1942.
IWA-50 therefore represents Wasp before that dramatic wartime career – a snapshot of an American carrier and its aviation complement on the eve of enormous change.
