JACKSON1861 – Brigadier General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson
In the summer of 1861, Thomas Jonathan Jackson was not yet the legendary “Stonewall” of Civil War memory. He was a former U.S. Army officer and instructor at the Virginia Military Institute who had entered Confederate service as the United States descended into civil war.
That changed dramatically at the First Battle of Manassas, or First Bull Run, on 21 July 1861.
Jackson commanded a brigade of Virginia troops on Henry House Hill, where Confederate forces resisted repeated Union attacks. During the fighting, Brigadier General Barnard Bee famously associated Jackson and his men with the image of a “stone wall” – although the exact wording and intent behind the remark have long been debated.
JACKSON1861 portrays Brigadier General Thomas J. Jackson during this formative period of the war. Rather than representing the later lieutenant general of the Valley Campaign and Army of Northern Virginia, the figure captures Jackson at the beginning of the reputation that would make him one of the Confederacy's most famous commanders.
He makes a natural command figure for John Jenkins Designs' Stonewall Brigade releases, particularly the 4th, 5th and 33rd Virginia infantry. Positioned behind the battle line, Jackson gives those formations an immediate historical identity.
Jackson would go on to achieve major battlefield successes before being accidentally wounded by Confederate troops at Chancellorsville in May 1863. He died several days later.
