JAN-02 – Janissaries
For centuries, the Janissaries were among the most famous military institutions of the Ottoman Empire. Originating during the empire's early expansion, they developed into an elite standing infantry corps closely associated with the Ottoman sultan.
JAN-02 – Janissaries brings these distinctive soldiers into the John Jenkins Designs Ottoman collection.
Unlike many forces that depended heavily upon troops raised only for particular campaigns, the Janissaries formed part of a permanent military establishment. They were subject to specialised organisation and training and became increasingly associated with the use of gunpowder weapons, particularly as Ottoman warfare developed through the 15th and 16th centuries.
Janissaries took part in campaigns across southeastern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Their battlefield role evolved considerably over their long history, so they should not be thought of as representing one unchanged military system across several centuries.
JAN-02 can form part of the main infantry body, support the more heavily protected Zihril Nefer or be arranged around Ottoman command figures.
Available from The Military Workshop – a characterful John Jenkins Designs Janissary set representing one of the most celebrated military corps of the Ottoman Empire.
