JJCLUB-2012A – Samuel “Sandy” Jenkins – Wagoner

Not every important figure on a battlefield carried a musket or commanded troops. Armies depended upon an enormous supporting network of wagoners, drivers, craftsmen and labourers to keep soldiers supplied and moving.

JJCLUB-2012A – Samuel “Sandy” Jenkins, Wagoner celebrates one of those less glamorous but absolutely essential military roles.

Before the widespread use of railways and motor transport, the wagon was fundamental to campaigning. Food, ammunition, tents, tools and other stores had to follow an army wherever it marched, often along roads that became almost impassable after heavy rain or prolonged military traffic.

The wagoner's responsibility went beyond simply driving. Horses or draft animals had to be managed and equipment kept moving despite breakdowns, bad roads and the confusion surrounding a military column.

As a miniature, Sandy Jenkins is wonderfully versatile. Position him with a supply wagon, around a camp or on a road behind marching troops. He can turn an otherwise static vehicle into an active logistical scene.

Available through The Military Workshop – an unusual John Jenkins Designs Collectors' Club figure paying tribute to the wagoners who kept armies supplied long before the age of mechanised transport.
