JJCLUB-2013A – Private Jenkins – British 35th Regiment of Foot, Plains of Abraham 1759
On 13 September 1759, British and French armies confronted one another outside Quebec in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, one of the decisive engagements of the French and Indian War.
Among the British units present was the 35th Regiment of Foot, represented here by JJCLUB-2013A – Private Jenkins.
Major General James Wolfe had succeeded in getting troops onto the heights west of Quebec, forcing the French commander, the Marquis de Montcalm, to respond. The battle that followed was comparatively brief but enormously consequential. Both Wolfe and Montcalm were mortally wounded, and Quebec subsequently fell to the British.
The 35th formed part of Wolfe's battle line and participated in the disciplined infantry action for which the engagement became famous.
Private Jenkins provides the grand history of Quebec with an ordinary soldier's perspective. Rather than portraying another general, the figure represents one of the rank-and-file infantrymen upon whom the outcome ultimately depended.
