JJCLUB-SET#09 – Captain John Norton – “The Snipe,” Mohawk War Chief
John Norton, also known by the Mohawk name Teyoninhokarawen, was one of the most remarkable Indigenous military leaders associated with British North America during the War of 1812.
Born in Scotland to a Cherokee father and Scottish mother, Norton eventually became closely connected with the Mohawk community at Grand River and emerged as an influential leader and interpreter.
JJCLUB-SET#09 portrays Norton as “The Snipe,” Mohawk War Chief, providing the War of 1812 collection with an important named personality.
Norton and Indigenous warriors fought alongside British and Canadian forces during several operations. He is particularly associated with the Battle of Queenston Heights on 13 October 1812, where Indigenous fighters played an important role in resisting American forces while British reinforcements were organised.
His life also illustrates the complicated personal and political relationships of the North American frontier, where Indigenous nations pursued their own interests rather than simply functioning as extensions of British or American armies.
Available through The Military Workshop – an important John Jenkins Designs portrayal of Captain John Norton, adding one of the War of 1812's most fascinating Indigenous leaders to the collection.
