LANC-27N – Four Lancastrian Billmen – Battle of Bosworth Field, 1485
On 22 August 1485, the rival forces of King Richard III and Henry Tudor met near Market Bosworth in Leicestershire. The battle that followed brought the long struggle for the English crown known as the Wars of the Roses to one of its most decisive moments.
LANC-27N provides four Lancastrian Billmen, giving collectors an excellent ready-made body of infantry for Henry Tudor's army at Bosworth.
The English bill was a formidable polearm that developed from an agricultural cutting implement into an effective battlefield weapon. Its combination of blade, point and hook allowed a trained billman to thrust, cut and potentially pull an opponent off balance. Bills were commonly used alongside bows and other polearms in late-medieval English armies.
Henry Tudor's invasion force included English and Welsh supporters as well as troops recruited or provided from abroad. His position remained precarious until the outcome at Bosworth effectively secured his claim to the throne.
These four billmen can form the centre of a larger Lancastrian infantry body. Mix them with individual billmen and archers, leaving enough variation in spacing to suggest men moving across uneven battlefield ground rather than standing on parade.
