LANC-30 – Lancastrian Knight represents one of the heavily protected men-at-arms supporting Henry Tudor's cause at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
By 1485, plate armour had reached an impressive level of sophistication. A well-equipped man-at-arms could be protected by articulated plates covering much of the body while still retaining the mobility needed to fight on foot or horseback. Contrary to the popular image of knights being almost helpless once dismounted, good armour was designed to permit considerable movement.
The Wars of the Roses were also not simply battles between uniformly dressed “red rose” and “white rose” armies. Loyalties were personal and political, and badges, liveries, banners and the retainers of powerful nobles were central to identifying forces.
At Bosworth, the loyalties of some major magnates remained crucial until the battle was well underway. The intervention of the Stanley forces ultimately helped turn the engagement decisively against Richard III.
LANC-30 works beautifully among the Lancastrian billmen as a senior or higher-status fighting figure. Place him near a standard or at the point where opposing troops are closing and the knight naturally becomes one of the visual anchors of the scene.
