LANC-33 – Lancastrian Billman – Battle of Bosworth Field, 1485
LANC-33 returns to the ordinary infantryman whose presence gave a late-medieval army much of its fighting strength.
This Lancastrian Billman belongs to the forces associated with Henry Tudor at Bosworth in 1485 and makes an ideal companion to the four-man LANC-27N set.
The bill was particularly well suited to infantry combat. Its long shaft provided reach, while the head could incorporate cutting, thrusting and hooking elements. In the hands of organised infantry, billmen could form a formidable body capable of engaging both enemy foot soldiers and heavily protected men-at-arms.
Bosworth would prove fatal for Richard III, who was killed during the fighting. Henry Tudor emerged victorious and was crowned Henry VII, establishing the Tudor dynasty.
LANC-33 is especially useful for breaking up the regularity of larger sets. Position him between different billmen, slightly forward of the main formation or near a knight to suggest retainers closing around their leaders.
