LONGHOUSE EXTENSION 2 – Longhouse Extension #2
Longhouse Extension #2 gives collectors additional freedom when designing an Indigenous North American village or settlement.
The Haudenosaunee are often known as the People of the Longhouse, and the building itself carries significance beyond being simply a form of shelter. Physically, longhouses housed related families; symbolically, the longhouse also became closely connected with Haudenosaunee political identity.
Adding another structural section allows a display to better suggest the scale of these communal buildings.
Instead of placing the longhouse in isolation, consider creating pathways around it and positioning everyday figures nearby. Cooking, conversation, stored equipment and people entering or leaving the building can turn the scene into a living settlement.
For French and Indian War collections in particular, such civilian and architectural elements provide valuable context for the military events occurring around Indigenous communities.
Available through The Military Workshop – a versatile John Jenkins Designs extension section for creating a larger and more immersive longhouse display.
