M-WIN-23 – Two Maratha Arab Mercenaries
The armies of the Maratha powers were far more diverse than a simple division between cavalry and infantry. Among the soldiers who could be found in Indian service were Arab mercenaries, valued by a number of rulers for their military experience and fighting reputation.
M-WIN-23 – Two Maratha Arab Mercenaries adds another pair of these distinctive troops to the John Jenkins Designs Maratha forces.
Mercenary service had a long history across the Indian subcontinent. Soldiers might serve rulers far from their original homelands, bringing their own military traditions while operating within armies containing Maratha cavalry, locally recruited infantry, artillery and other specialist troops.
These two figures are particularly useful when combined with the M-WIN-20 Standard Bearer and Musician and the M-WIN-22 Arab Mercenaries. Together they can form a recognisable contingent within a much larger Maratha army rather than appearing as isolated figures.
Keeping the Arab troops grouped around their own standard creates a particularly effective display and emphasises the varied composition of Indian armies during this period.
Available from The Military Workshop – a two-piece John Jenkins Designs Maratha Arab Mercenary set adding another fascinating element to the military world of India.
