M-WIN-31 – Two Maratha Infantry
M-WIN-31 provides two Maratha infantrymen, representing the increasingly important foot soldiers who served alongside the better-known mounted forces of the Maratha powers.
By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, warfare in India was changing. Maratha rulers employed increasingly organised infantry and artillery, and European officers and military specialists sometimes played roles in training forces along contemporary lines.
This did not mean that Indian armies simply became copies of European ones. Instead, older military traditions existed alongside newly adopted weapons, drill and organisation.
These two infantrymen can form part of the main body around M-WIN-30's Standard Bearer and Musician. Combine several different infantry codes so that the unit develops depth without becoming a row of identical poses.
They also provide an excellent visual counterpoint to the Sillidar and Bargir cavalry, showing the broader range of troops available to a Maratha commander.
Available from The Military Workshop – a versatile two-piece John Jenkins Designs Maratha Infantry set for building the foot soldiers of one of India's great military powers.
